What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained

Answer engine optimization (AEO) structures content so search engines and AI assistants can lift a clear answer from it. Definition, how it works, techniques and examples.

Artificial AI SEO – ai letters

Short answer: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of structuring and writing content so that search engines and AI assistants can extract a clear, correct answer from it – for featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants and conversational AI search. It focuses on questions rather than keywords and on passages rather than whole pages.

What an answer engine is

An answer engine is any system that responds to a question with an answer instead of, or in addition to, a list of links. Google’s featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes are answer engines. So are voice assistants that read out one response, and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity that write answers from several sources. AEO prepares your content for all of them.

AEO vs SEO

SEO asks, “Will this page rank?” AEO asks, “Will this be the answer?” A page can rank on the first page and still never be used as an answer if the answer is buried in the fourth paragraph. AEO fixes that by changing structure, not by replacing SEO. For the full comparison with GEO as well, see AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What Is the Difference?.

How answer engines choose answers

Answer engines look for a passage that addresses the question directly, in a format that suits it, from a source they consider reliable. That means three things you can control: where the answer sits, how it is formatted and how trustworthy the page and source appear.

Core AEO techniques

1. Put the answer first

Open each section with a one- or two-sentence answer, then explain. If someone reads only the first sentence, they should have their answer.

2. Use question headings

Phrase headings the way people ask: “How long does a website audit take?” rather than “Audit timeline”.

3. Match the format to the question

Question type Best format
What is…? A concise definition paragraph
How to…? Numbered steps
Which is better…? A comparison table
What are the types / options…? A short bulleted list
How much / how long…? A direct figure or range with conditions

4. One question, one owner

Assign each question to a single page. Several pages answering the same question compete with each other and confuse search systems.

5. Keep answers consistent and current

If your pricing page and FAQ give different answers, neither is reliable. Review answers when facts change.

Where AEO shows up

  • Featured snippets – a highlighted answer above or among organic results. See How to Win Featured Snippets in 2026.
  • People Also Ask – expandable related questions. See People Also Ask SEO: A Practical Guide.
  • Voice assistants – single spoken answers. See Voice Search vs AI Search: What Businesses Need to Know.
  • AI assistants and AI Overviews – generated answers that draw on extractable passages, where AEO overlaps with GEO.

An AEO example

Before: a heading “Our Process” followed by three paragraphs about commitment and quality. After: a heading “How does a technical SEO audit work?”, followed by “A technical SEO audit takes one to two weeks and follows five steps: crawl, indexing review, rendering tests, structured data validation and a prioritised report.” and then a numbered list explaining each step. The second version can be used as a snippet, read aloud by a voice assistant and quoted by an AI assistant.

Measuring AEO

Track the priority questions where you own the featured snippet or appear in People Also Ask, monitor clicks and impressions for those queries in Search Console, and include assistant answers in your monthly prompt tracking.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Long introductions before the answer.
  • Relying on FAQ schema instead of improving the answer itself – Google has limited FAQ rich results.
  • Answers that are technically correct but too vague to be useful.
  • Duplicate FAQ blocks copied across many pages.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO only for informational queries?

No. Commercial questions – pricing, timelines, comparisons – are some of the most valuable to answer clearly.

Does AEO reduce clicks?

Some simple questions end on the results page, but being the answer builds recognition and attracts the visitors who need more detail.

Can I do AEO without rewriting everything?

Yes – start with your most valuable pages and add direct answers under question headings. See The AEO Checklist: 25 Ways to Become the Answer.
