How to Optimize Your Website for ChatGPT Search

A practical guide to ChatGPT search optimization: crawler access for OAI-SearchBot, answer-first pages, consistent brand facts, citation-worthy evidence and how to track results.

Artificial AI SEO – analyst holo

Short answer: make sure OAI-SearchBot – the crawler OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search – can access your pages, publish specific, answer-first content for the questions your customers actually ask, keep your brand facts consistent across the web, and track a fixed set of prompts to see when ChatGPT cites or mentions you.

How ChatGPT search works

When a question needs current or specific information, ChatGPT can search the web, read relevant pages and write an answer with links to its sources. OpenAI states that public websites can appear in ChatGPT search and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so that pages can be discovered. In practice, the pipeline looks familiar to any SEO: the system needs to reach your page, understand it, pick out the passage that answers the question and decide that your page is a trustworthy source.

ChatGPT also answers many questions from what its underlying model already knows. That knowledge comes from training data, which is why how your brand is described across the web matters even when no live search happens. We cover that side in LLM Brand Visibility: Measuring and Improving It.

Step 1: allow the right crawler

OpenAI uses different user agents for different purposes:

User agent Purpose Typical decision
OAI-SearchBot Discovering pages for ChatGPT search Allow if you want to appear in ChatGPT search
ChatGPT-User Fetching a page when a user or GPT requests it Usually allow
GPTBot Collecting data for model training Your choice – separate from search

Check three places: your robots.txt, your firewall or CDN bot rules (which often block unfamiliar bots by default), and your server logs to confirm the crawler actually reaches your pages. A deliberate policy for each bot is better than a blanket block. The full list of AI crawlers is in AI Crawler List: User Agents Every Site Owner Should Know, and the robots.txt patterns are in Robots.txt for AI Crawlers: Search Bots vs Training Bots.

Step 2: find the questions that matter

ChatGPT prompts are longer and more specific than typed search queries. People ask things like “which AI SEO agency in India works with SaaS companies and explains its process?” rather than “AI SEO agency”. Build a question list from:

  • sales calls and discovery meetings,
  • support tickets and pre-sales emails,
  • People Also Ask boxes and Search Console queries,
  • comparison questions your competitors are already answering.

Group the questions by intent – learning, comparing, choosing, buying – and assign each group to one page. That page becomes the canonical answer on your site.

Step 3: write answer-first pages

ChatGPT pulls passages, so structure matters as much as quality:

  1. Open each section with a one- or two-sentence direct answer.
  2. Use headings phrased like the question.
  3. Use numbered steps for processes and tables for comparisons.
  4. Define terms in plain language the first time you use them.
  5. Keep each section self-contained, so it still makes sense when quoted alone.

This is the same discipline as answer engine optimization, explained in How to Write Direct Answers That Search Engines Extract.

Step 4: add evidence only you can provide

Generic content has little reason to be cited – ChatGPT can summarise generic knowledge without you. What earns citations is specific, attributable information: your actual process, timelines, prices or price factors, anonymised examples, data you collected and the named expert behind the work. That is the core of generative engine optimization; see GEO.

Step 5: make your brand facts consistent

If your website says one thing, your LinkedIn page another and three directories something else, an AI system has to guess. Standardise your company name, one-sentence description, services, locations, founder and contact details. Mark them up with Organization and Person schema and link your official profiles with sameAs. Our Entity SEO service covers this in depth.

Step 6: earn mentions on sources ChatGPT already uses

Run your priority prompts and look at which sites ChatGPT cites. They are often industry publications, comparison sites, review platforms, forums and well-known blogs. Being accurately represented on those sources – through PR, reviews, expert contributions or partnerships – increases the chance that your brand appears in answers, even when your own page is not the one cited.

Step 7: measure with a prompt set

Create 30–100 prompts that reflect real buyer questions. Run them monthly with the same wording, record whether your pages are cited, whether your brand is mentioned, whether the description is accurate and which competitors appear. Answers vary between runs, so trends over several months matter more than any single result. The method is explained step by step in How to Measure AI Search Visibility.

Before and after: making a service page citable

Before: a page titled “Our SEO Services” opens with three paragraphs about passion and excellence, lists eight services in one line and ends with a contact form. There is nothing specific for ChatGPT to quote, and nothing that distinguishes the business.

After: the page opens with a two-sentence definition of the service and who it is for. A section titled “What does a technical SEO audit include?” lists the twelve checks performed. Another, “How long does it take?”, gives a realistic range and the factors that change it. A short anonymised example describes a problem found and fixed. The page names the specialist who leads the work and links to their profile. Every one of those sections can stand alone as an answer – which is exactly what a retrieval system looks for.

The rewrite usually takes a few hours per page and improves conversion for human visitors at the same time, because buyers want the same clarity.

ChatGPT visibility by industry

  • B2B services and agencies: process pages, pricing factors, case examples and founder expertise carry the most weight.
  • SaaS: honest comparisons, integration pages and documentation are frequently cited when users ask for tool recommendations.
  • Ecommerce: buying guides, sizing and compatibility information and genuine reviews help product questions.
  • Healthcare, finance and legal: accuracy and named, qualified reviewers are essential; answers in these areas are held to a higher standard.
  • Local businesses: consistent location details, reviews and service-area pages support “near me” style questions.

A realistic 60-day timeline

Days 1–7: crawler access audit, question list and baseline prompt run. Days 8–30: rewrite the five highest-value pages answer-first, add evidence and fix entity inconsistencies. Days 31–60: publish supporting articles for the most common questions, link them to the core pages, correct third-party profiles and re-run the prompt set. By day 60 you will know which pages ChatGPT prefers and where the gaps remain.

What not to do

  • Don’t block OAI-SearchBot while trying to block training. The two are controlled separately.
  • Don’t publish dozens of thin “ChatGPT SEO” pages. One strong page per intent beats ten weak ones.
  • Don’t hide key content behind scripts, tabs or logins. If it is not in the rendered HTML, it may not be read.
  • Don’t chase tricks. Prompt-injection text or hidden instructions aimed at AI systems are risky and unethical.

A ChatGPT search checklist

  • OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt and not blocked by the firewall
  • Key pages indexed in Google and Bing and rendering server-side
  • Question list mapped to one page per intent
  • Direct answers at the top of each section
  • Specific evidence: process, numbers, examples, named expert
  • Consistent brand facts with Organization and Person schema
  • Accurate profiles on the third-party sources ChatGPT cites
  • Monthly prompt tracking with citation and mention records

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use Google’s index?

ChatGPT search uses its own retrieval and partners rather than simply showing Google’s results, which is why direct crawler access and strong pages on your own site matter.

How long does it take to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Crawler access and page improvements can be picked up quickly, but consistent citations usually build over several months.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No one can. We improve the signals ChatGPT relies on and measure the change honestly.
