Short answer: SEO helps a page rank in search results, AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) helps it become the direct answer shown in snippets, People Also Ask and voice assistants, and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) helps it be cited inside AI-generated answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. They overlap heavily, and one well-structured page can succeed at all three.
Why three acronyms?
The acronyms describe three different ways information is presented to searchers. A classic results page lists documents. An answer box extracts a single answer. A generative experience writes a new answer and cites the sources it drew on. Each presentation rewards slightly different qualities in your content, so it helps to name them separately – even though the underlying work is shared.
The comparison at a glance
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Will this page rank? | Will this be the answer? | Will this be cited in an AI answer? |
| Where it appears | Organic results | Featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Unit of content | Page | Question and answer | Passage and source |
| What wins | Relevance, quality, links, technical health | The clearest, best-formatted answer | Specific, evidence-backed, clearly attributed content |
| Main metrics | Rankings, clicks, conversions | Snippet and PAA ownership | Citations, brand mentions, accuracy |
SEO: the foundation
Search Engine Optimization makes pages discoverable and relevant: crawlable and indexable, matched to search intent, well linked internally and externally, fast and usable. It is the foundation because both answer engines and generative engines retrieve from the same web. If a page is not indexed, it cannot be a featured snippet or an AI citation. Our AI SEO page explains how traditional SEO is being extended for AI search.
AEO: becoming the answer
Answer Engine Optimization focuses on the moment a system needs one clear answer. The techniques are practical:
- Put a direct answer in the first one or two sentences of a section.
- Use headings that mirror how people phrase the question.
- Match the format to the query: a paragraph for “what is”, numbered steps for “how to”, a table for comparisons.
- Keep answers accurate, current and consistent across your site.
AEO also covers voice search and conversational follow-ups. Details and examples are in What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained and on our AEO service page.
GEO: being cited by AI
Generative Engine Optimization targets AI systems that synthesise an answer from several sources. These systems favour passages that are easy to extract and safe to rely on. That means:
- Specificity – numbers, definitions, named steps and concrete examples instead of generalities.
- Evidence – original data, first-hand experience and clear sourcing.
- Attribution – visible authorship, a real organisation and consistent entity information.
- Access – allowing the right crawlers, such as OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and PerplexityBot for Perplexity.
GEO cannot force an AI to cite you; every platform decides its own sources. It improves the odds and makes the change measurable. Read What Is GEO? Generative Engine Optimization Guide and our GEO page for the full framework.
How the three work together on one page
Consider a service page for “technical SEO audit”. SEO ensures it is indexed, fast and targeted at the right intent. AEO adds a short definition at the top, a numbered list of what the audit covers and a concise FAQ. GEO adds what only you can say – the exact checks you run, typical findings, an anonymised example and who performs the work. The same page now competes for a ranking, a snippet and a citation.
How each platform presents answers
Google Search mixes all three presentations on one page. Organic listings reward SEO. Featured snippets and People Also Ask reward AEO. AI Overviews and AI Mode summarise a topic and show supporting links, which is where GEO matters – and Google is clear that pages must be indexed and snippet-eligible to be used. See Google AI SEO.
ChatGPT search retrieves web pages when a question needs current information and shows its sources. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface sites in ChatGPT search, so access comes first; clear, specific passages come second. See How to Optimize Your Website for ChatGPT Search.
Gemini can ground its answers in Google Search, which makes strong Google SEO and entity clarity the main levers.
Perplexity presents itself as an answer engine and shows numbered citations for almost every reply, which makes it the easiest platform on which to see whether GEO is working. See Perplexity SEO.
The lesson is that you do not need four strategies. You need one strong foundation, answer-first structure and citation-worthy evidence – then platform-specific checks for access and measurement.
Where to invest first if the budget is small
If you can only do one thing this quarter, restructure your five most valuable pages answer-first and make sure they are indexed and accessible to search and AI crawlers. That single piece of work improves SEO, AEO and GEO at once. Add original evidence to those pages next quarter, then expand into supporting articles that link back to them. This order produces measurable progress quickly without spreading effort across dozens of thin pages.
How to prioritise
- Fix SEO blockers first. Indexing, crawler access and rendering problems cap everything else.
- Apply AEO structure to money pages. Services, pricing, comparison and FAQ-heavy pages benefit fastest.
- Layer GEO evidence onto topics you want to own. Original examples and data take longer but compound.
- Measure all three. Search Console for SEO and AEO, prompt tracking for GEO – see How to Measure AI Search Visibility.
A worked example across platforms
Imagine a physiotherapy clinic that wants to be visible for “how long does a frozen shoulder take to heal”. In classic search, its article needs to be indexed, load quickly and satisfy the intent better than competing pages – that is SEO. For a featured snippet, the article should open with a two-sentence answer that states the typical range and the main factors, followed by a short list of the stages – that is AEO. For an AI Overview or a ChatGPT answer, the page becomes more citable if a named physiotherapist explains what the clinic sees in practice, the article cites clinical guidance, and the clinic’s name, location and services are consistent across its site and profiles – that is GEO combined with entity SEO.
None of these steps conflict. The same page, written well, serves all three presentations. The difference is only in what you check before publishing.
Checklist by discipline
SEO checklist
- Indexed, canonical and included in the XML sitemap
- Title and H1 matched to the main intent
- Internal links from relevant hub pages
- Fast, mobile-friendly and free of rendering problems
AEO checklist
- Direct answer in the first sentences of each section
- Headings phrased as the questions people ask
- Lists for steps, tables for comparisons
- No contradictory answers elsewhere on the site
GEO checklist
- Specific facts, numbers and definitions
- First-hand experience or original data
- Named author and organisation with consistent details
- Search crawlers for AI platforms allowed in robots.txt
How to report on SEO, AEO and GEO together
Leadership rarely wants three separate reports. A single monthly view works better: organic clicks and conversions (SEO), the number of priority questions where you own the snippet or appear in People Also Ask (AEO), and the share of tracked prompts where your pages are cited or your brand is mentioned accurately (GEO). Trends across all three show whether the work is compounding – and where to focus next. Our AI Search Analytics service sets this up for you.
Common misconceptions
- “GEO replaces SEO.” It cannot – generative systems retrieve from indexed, accessible pages.
- “AEO is just FAQ schema.” Google has limited FAQ rich results; AEO is about answer quality and structure, not a markup trick.
- “You need separate pages for SEO, AEO and GEO.” No. Separate pages for the same intent compete with each other.
Frequently asked questions
Which matters most in 2026?
SEO remains the prerequisite. For most businesses, the biggest untapped gains come from AEO structure on existing pages and GEO evidence on core topics.
Is AEO the same as voice search optimization?
Voice is one surface of AEO. Snippets, People Also Ask and AI assistants all reward the same clarity.
Can a small business compete in GEO?
Yes. Specific, first-hand content about a niche is often more citable than generic content from a large brand.
